History of Gateway Church of Christ

The Gateway Church of Christ was officially established on Father's Day, June 23rd, 1996. Tom Tyler, a new Christian who lived in Vienna, Maryland gave Evangelist Mark Billiter $500.00 to buy a communion set to begin a new work somewhere between Cambridge and Salisbury. Tom was immersed into Christ as a result of teaching from J.V. Wells. Brother Tom was a victim of cancer but was very enthusiastic to see a new Church. He did not live to see this dream fulfilled; however, his efforts have seen many souls come to Christ.

Brother J.V. Wells and family were attending the Fruitland Christian Church in Fruitland, MD. After much prayer and seeing the need presented to him by Brother J.V. and Tom, Mark Billiter, Evangelist at the time of the Dagsboro Church of Christ in Dagsboro, Delaware decided to meet with Christians who might be interested in a new work.

We had several meetings and Bible studies in the home of J.V. Wells on Nanticoke Road. Then with our first Trustees David Sollars, J.V. Wells, Mark Billiter and John Hurley, we officially met as the Gateway Church of Christ on June 23, 1996.

Our beginnings were humble. We used Brother J.V. Wells' garage at his home to get started. Then, when his house sold, Sister Gloria Senkbeil let us use the Hebron Family Restaurant in Hebron, Maryland to meet in on Sundays. We met there for several years until we outgrew the facility. The Hebron Fire Department let us use their dining hall to meet as we continued to grow. During the time between meeting in the restaurant and the Fire Department, we were able to raise enough money to buy the property on U.S. Rt. 50 near Mardela Springs, Maryland where we are currently located. God has blessed us much through the years with gifts of love from many people. God knows all who have made a New Testament Church in this area possible.

The new building was dedicated on September 29, 2002.
